Hydrogen Solutions

Emission-free hydrogen

Hydrogen is believed to play a significant role in achieving global climate objectives in the future. Hydrogen produced with renewable energy is emission-free and storable, which helps partially solve the storage problem of weather-dependent renewable electricity production. EPV Energy, together with actors from Vaasa, is exploring the possibilities of producing hydrogen from renewable energy and converting it back into electricity.

EPV has already made significant investments in wind power production and plans to continue large investments in the future. When weather-dependent production exceeds demand, the electricity must be stored for later use. Hydrogen is seen as one of the future solutions for storing renewable electricity, and EPV wants to be involved in its development as part of emission-free heat and electricity production. Additionally, the heat generated in hydrogen and energy production can be utilized in the district heating network, thereby maximizing the overall efficiency of the systems.

H-Flex-E Project

The goal of EPV and actors from Vaasa was to build a Power-to-X-to-Power system (H-Flex-E), which would have enabled a new way to store renewable energy. At the same time, it would have opened up the possibility to pilot a hydrogen-based energy production solution suitable for global export markets. However, the H-Flex-E hydrogen project was decided to be terminated as such at the end of 2024, because the costs exceeded the original estimates and a functional and economically viable solution could not be built with this concept.

The H-Flex-E project, which had been running since 2021, nevertheless advanced the development of the hydrogen concept. The project already had an environmental permit and a pending chemical safety permit. These permits are intended to be utilized in the best possible way in future projects as well. EPV continues to explore opportunities in Vaasa with the existing infrastructure.
